The Department of Political Affairs follows up on issues and developments in the OIC Member States and with non-OIC Member States and international and regional organisations. The department is assigned with mandates focusing on:
- Prevent conflicts and engage in peacemaking operations in OIC Member States;
- Contribute to peace-building initiatives in accordance with decisions adopted by the Islamic Summits and the Councils of Foreign Ministers
- Establish partnerships with Non-Member States as well as with international and regional organisations
- Institutionalise good governance in the Member States by observing elections and encouraging democratic practices
- Combating international terrorism and studying various international and regional political issues
- Follow up and monitor issues affecting Muslim minorities and communities in non-OIC Member States
- Monitor all forms of Islamophobia, report to all Member States on this phenomenon, and combat intolerance, hatred, and prejudice against Islam, against Muslims, as well as against anything associated with this religion, such as Mosques, Islamic Centers, Holy Qur’an, Hijab, etc.
The Department of Political Affairs regularly contacts its counterparts in international and regional organisations to ensure information-sharing and cooperation on international and regional or country-specific issues of mutual concern.
